Belmont Park has played host to some of Thoroughbred racing's greatest champions, from Man O' War and Citation to modern-day heroes Secretariat and Cigar. Internationally acclaimed equine artist Richard Stone Reeves salutes Belmont's first century with portraits of 70 racehorses who thrilled crowds, set records, and became legends at the fabled New York track.
Belmont Park: A Century of Champions reveals the breadth of Reeves' artistry and his singular ability to capture the essence of his subjects. This volume contains Reeves' first major commission, a painting of Calumet Farm champion Armed, which appeared in LIFE magazine in 1948, as well as his recent portraits of 2004 Belmont Stakes victor Birdstone and champion Ghostzapper. Reeves also pays tribute to the great Man O' War, who raced long before the artist's day but who set the standard for excellence at the then-nascent racetrack.
Reeves also shares his personal observations about each subject, noting a distinguishing feature, for example, or how they behaved while posing. In addition to these memorable portraits, award-winning Turf writer Edward L. Bowen profiles each horse in this volume. Bowen, racings leading historian, brings these champions, their owners, and their trainers to life with his colourful and erudite prose.
